On Thursday, Dec. 22, Idaho will take on Colorado State in the 20th edition of the Potato Bowl. Both teams enter this bowl game having pretty different circumstances in terms of their bowl history in recent years.

In this year’s Potato Bowl, Idaho will be making its first bowl appearance since its 8-5 season back in 2009. Colorado, on the other hand, has had good seasons under both former head coach Jim McElwain and current head coach Mike Bobo. The Rams will be making their fourth straight bowl appearance against the Vandals.

Although this bowl game obviously is not in the highest of tiers when it comes to the college football bowl season, some in the past have been pretty entertaining. Last year featured a slim 23-21 Akron win over Utah State. Some past game MVPs are pretty notable too, which include Matt Ryan, Jared Zabransky, and Colin Kaepernick.

Given that this is the only bowl game on television this night, let’s one can only hope it’s as entertaining as last year’s.

Three big things to know

  1. Idaho had a huge turnaround from a season ago: The Vandals making it to a bowl and winning eight games looked pretty improbable after last season. In 2015, the Vandals went 4-8. Fast forward just a year later, and fourth year head coach Paul Petrino has gotten the Vandals to their first winning season since 2009.
  2. The mascot for this bowl is a dancing potato: We’d like to introduce you to Spuddy Buddy — the smiling, dancing, Idaho Potato Commission mascot that makes the Idaho Potato bowl so lively.
  3. The game is played on Boise State’s famous blue turf: Albertson’s Stadium is the host of this bowl game, which is where the Boise State Broncos play their home games. It’s also where the famous blue turf is, so don’t be alarmed when you see this on your TV.
